Building category authority in embedded finance
The change
My client delivers capital to small businesses inside the vertical software those businesses already use — through the SaaS platforms that run their operations, rather than through a bank. That's a genuinely new category, and new categories carry a communications problem: every audience that needs to understand it — platform partners, merchants, investors, regulators, press — hears "merchant cash advance," "revenue-based financing," and "embedded capital" differently, and some of those associations are actively harmful.
The stakes
In small-business finance, trust is the product. A muddled explanation doesn't just cost coverage — it costs platform partnerships, and it invites the wrong regulatory framing.
The result
Executive visibility moved from opportunistic to programmatic. Rather than deciding conference by conference whether to submit, the company now works from a scored target map, a tracked submission pipeline with real deadlines, and a category narrative that every new platform partnership can launch from — including the distinctions that keep a technical, trust-sensitive product from being described in the wrong category by someone else.
How we moved the needle
Executive speaking and conference strategy: identifying where the company's leaders needed to be heard, what they should say when they got there, and how each appearance connected to the broader category argument.
What I built
· A conference and speaking map of the events where vertical SaaS platform decision-makers, fintech infrastructure buyers, and small-business finance media actually convene — scored by audience fit rather than prestige.
· A speaker placement pipeline with tracked submissions, deadlines, and tailored abstracts matched to each program's selection criteria.
· An executive narrative for the category — clear, defensible distinctions between embedded capital and the products it gets confused with, built to hold up in front of a skeptical reporter or a compliance-minded partner.
· Reusable partner and executive messaging so every new platform launch starts from an approved narrative instead of a blank page.
